Note: Many graves of the deceased soldiers are know of but hundreds are not. Many have have been found by the
69th Pa. re-enactors
and in many cases markers have been placed by them
on the graves. The soldiers listed below are not exclusively Irish or Irish American some are of other nationalities
and religions.
Note: because quite a few soldiers had the same Christian name or surname - the Irish ones in particular- information on
the data bases
may not be fully accurate. This is especially true for soldiers with the same names and ranks who were perhaps transferred
from one Co.to another within the Regt.
Again thanks to Capt. John
Kopich and 2nd.Sergt. Bill Meehan for information from their Markers Lists.
Thanks also to descendants family members who have contacted me with information on their Civil War ancestors.
If you should know where an old soldier of the 69th lies maybe you'd make it known. Thanks.
Let us never forget the soldiers of the 69th P.V.I. who have no known or marked graves and
those buried in paupers graves with no location,
in these or other cemeteries, battlefields or any other place.

Samuel had been employed at the graveyard superintendent from April 1873 until he died 12th Feb 1882. He lived in a house on the site and in his years there has made many improvements to the Civil War part of the cemetery. He was responsible for building the stout red brick surround wall and adjusting the grave markers. It is noted that he suffered quite a lot of problems in the 1870s after the withdrawal of Federal troops with some locals who still had Confederate tendencies. The Stars and Stripes on the flag pole caused them annoyance!.Some more layout adjustments also took place in the 1950's.

Buried Old Methodist Cemetery Poolesville Md.
Probably one of the less known burial sites of soldiers of the 69th. The Poolesville Methodist
Episcopal Church was founded in 1826. A cemetery was established alongside the church in 1837. As Poolesville
was close to Camp Observation is would have been a logical place to bury some of the soldiers who died at
Observation. The names of those listed below are listed on the plaque associated with the small memorial. This was
erected in 2002
and contains the remains of what was found of the headstones and graveslabs remaining on the open site. The old wooden
church was
replaced with the current brick building built in 1868. The congregation left for another area of Poolsville in 1892.
It is known that some soldiers remains were removed from this site back to Philadelphia where some of them
came from. This is true of Privates Higgins and Driscoll now buried in the Old Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia.
From the dates it would appear that most died from disease at Camp Observation Md. during the winter encampment of 1861-1862.

Andersonville prison Ga was one of the most notorious prisons that Union
soldiers were incarcerated in. Approx. 75 men of the 69th were held there. About 20 died and were
buried there. Unlike so many other graveyards fairly accurate listings of the names
of the soldiers and where
they are buried exist. This is due to the foresight of one prisoner a Dorence Atwater
who was a close friend of
the first prisoner who died an Adam Swarner and Dorence volunteered to keep the records.
He wanted to make sure that those who died here were remembered and so the
families would know the fate and burial place of their loved ones. When the dead
were brought out of the stockade to the " deadhouse" they were brought by friends
who knew them. They would report what was known about the dead man such as name,
State, Regiment, date of death, cause, etc. Atwater recorded them numerically and attached
a tag to the body which matched the number in the records. The dead then were taken to the
cemetery where the first dozen were buried in pine boxes, however since the numbers dying
each day was growing so fast, and limited resources, the dead were stripped naked so the
living could use what the dead no longer needed. sThe bodies were then laid in trench type
graves dug 4 feet deep and long enough for 150 to 200 bodies and shoulder to shoulder
without coffins.
With the lack of resources to make grave markers, there was a small post placed at the
head of each grave with a number carved into it. This number matched the one on the
body tag, which matched Atwaters records.
When Dorence Atwater and a Miss Clara Barton returned after the war to establish the new
National Cemetery in July 1865, they simply had to match the numbers on the post with
the copy of the list that Atwater smuggled out when he was exchanged. This way, the
identified graves show exactly who is buried where. The posts were replaced with wooden
headboards.
In 1878, the wooden boards were replaced by the first set of stones which were plain
smooth stones with the name and grave number.
In 1898 when the US Government finally got around to establishing a standard grave
marker for Union soldiers, there were new stones placed in 1898-1899 to replace the
first stones. These stones now are the ones that mark the graves. So you see, each
time the replaced the marker with a new one, it was easy enough to know who was buried where.
Those who are buried as unknown will remain as such because there will be no way for anyone
but God to know who lies beneath the unknown stones.
Note: Thanks to Kevin Frye for the above information.

George joined the 69th on the Aug.19th 1861 along with his father also a musician. Young George was a versatile musician being able play a variety of instruments including fife and drums. He was appointed to teach the other aspiring musicians in the various companies. Sadly he contracted disease probably typhoid at Camp Observation near Poolsville Md and died there aged just 14 Jan 22nd 1862. He would have a large public funeral in Philadelphia and later be buried in the Hillsdie Cemetery Roslyn Montgomery Co. Pa. His father would survive the war.
The headstone/marker images above represent those of the very few soldiers who have recorded graves or on which we have burial information. Hundreds of the 69th Pa. soldiers have no known graves. No doubt they are mainly buried in mass battlefield graves or unmarked and unrecorded graves not only in the United States but in countries to which they returned or migrated to. Probably after their relatives passed on memories and information on
them generally passed into
oblivion. Many of these men were simply said to be "missing in action"-
MIA. However here is a small memorial to one such man. Let this information be a memorial to all those with no known
graves.
James Skinneder was born in Co. Monaghan Ireland in 1827. His name does not really fit into the "usual" name patterns associated with Ireland. At first glance the name suggests Skinnader was from Scots planter or Huguenot stock. However further investigation and with some knowledge of the history of Co. Monaghan its source can be determined. It is known that many census were carried out in Ireland mostly by the British military at various times. As both the Irish place names and names of people were difficult if not impossible for the English census takers to understand they simply wrote down what sounded correct to them resulting in "Anglicised" place and people names.
Such was the case of the name Skinnadar. The name is most probably the Anglicised version of the Irish name "scianadoir" a person associated with the use of knives. But for what purpose?. It is probably that the Skinnaders were an extended family or group of inter- related families who were perhaps employed by some of the ruling hunting families perhaps the McKennas, as skinners of animals hunted in the area of what is now Co. Monaghan. The name seems to be very unique and seems to be mostly in the Emyvale area of Co. Monaghan. The name is also found in parts of Scotland where the name turns up in the Scots Gaelic form as "seicheadair" a skinner of animals.
Like so many poor familes or family members James Skinneder hits the emigrant trail probably in the post famine era and the next recorded information we have on him is in 1851. He was recorded as having married Elizabeth Quinn in St. Malachys Catholic church Philadelphia the 2nd Nov. 1851. It is noted that their
daughter Mary Elizabeth was baptised at St Malachy's church
in Philadelphia by a Father Kelly. At the relatively old age 37 years of age James enlisted in Co. G.
of the
27th Pa. Infantry on May 5th 1861. It is possible that he had been a member of the Montgomery Guard militia prior to enlisting in the 27th. Pa. Regt. However by Sept. 6th of the same year this Irish Co. within a very Germanic 27th. Pa.
transferred to the
69th Pa.
On July 3rd. 1863 James Skinnedar found himself fighting at Gettysburg. He received wounds that would prove fatal. He was probably killed by "friendly" fire by Cowans battery of artillery to the rear of the 69th at the famous Wall at Gettysburg.
On July 7th 1863
an entry in the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin lists his name amongst the casualties at Gettysburg.
In a later muster out roll it is stated that he is
"absent since wounded July 3rd 1863 at Gettysburg".The last military record on him. But what of his wife?. Records show
that in 1866
Lieut. Bernard Sherry a most honourable man stated in Elizabeth's pension claim that at Gettysburg "Skinneder was mortally wounded and carried from the
line". His wife subsequently
received a pension of $8 a month. No record would ever be found of her husband. He was truly missing in action a fate that befell
scores of his comrades. He was probably buried in an unmarked grave somewhere either on the battlefield or environs of Gettysburg.
