Group I.

Known of and marked graves of the men of the 69th.Pa.- 71st Pa. soldiers buried in other locations in the United States and Europe.

Note: Many graves of the deceased soldiers are know of but hundreds are not. Many have have been found by the 69th Pa. re-enactors and in many cases markers have been placed by them on the graves. The soldiers listed below are not exclusively Irish or Irish American some are of other nationalities and religions.
Note: Because quite a few soldiers had the same Christian name or surname - the Irish ones in particular- information on the data bases may not be fully accurate. This is especially true for soldiers with the same names and ranks who were perhaps transferred from one Co.to another within the Regt.
Note: If you are researching a particular soldier be aware that the infomation given below is as accurate as I can determine as it has been developed from many sources. If you see a marker associated with a particular cemetery be aware that at least a marker exists and may possibly be in another cemetery.Impossible to give 100% accuracy.
With thanks to Capt. John Kopich and 2nd.Sergt. Bill Meehan of the 69th Pa. re-enactors group for information from their markers lists and also to Karl Jensen who has been most giving of information from his own research.
Thanks also to descendant family members who have contacted me with information on their Civil War ancestors. If you should know where an old soldier of the 69th lies maybe you'd make it known. Thanks.
Let us never forget the soldiers of the 69th P.V.I. who have no known or marked graves and those buried in paupers graves with no known location, in these or other cemeteries, battlefields or any other place.

Lieut. Samuel McKeown Co. G Grave 2993

Samuel had been employed at the graveyard superintendent from April 1873 until he died 12th Feb 1882. He lived in a house on the site and in his years there has made many improvements to the Civil War part of the cemetery. He was responsible for building the stout red brick surround wall and adjusting the grave markers. It is noted that he suffered quite a lot of problems in the 1870s after the withdrawal of Federal troops with some locals who still had Confederate tendencies. The Stars and Stripes on the flag pole caused them annoyance!.Some more layout adjustments also took place in the 1950's.

Pvte Stewart McCormick Co. F. Died 15th Feb. 1862.
Pvte Edward Ormsby Co. I. Died 18th June 1862.

Note: The early history of Old St Marys parish cemeteries is complicated. The cemetery adjoining the church property on South 4th St is just one of these. (Viewable on Goggle Earth). This cemetery at South and 4th opened about 1759 and remained active until the 1880's. The inscriptions of the headstones (the ones that could be read) were published in Vol.III of the records of the Records of the ACHA the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia. A subsequent St Marys cemetery probably developed as the original became full up was developed at 13th & Budd (Now Bruce St) was opened in 1800 and remained active until the 1840's. There were burial registers which existed 1823-1843 and 1844-1850. However it would appear that this cemetery ceased to be operative and this property was sold in May 1899 and bodies not claimed were removed to a "New" St Marys at 11th and Moore St. This "New" St Marys located at 11th and Moore St. in S. Philadelphia opened in the 1840's remained active until about the 1880's.
By 1910 the cemetery was so run down and records destroyed by fire that a decision was taken to removed the remains to the Holy Cross at Yeadon Pa.
NOTE:March 4th 2014.Following received from a source in the States.
This cemetery was active from the 1840s until the 1880s. By 1910, the cemetery was neglected and a fire (date unknown) destroyed the cemetery records. The bodies in Saint Mary's were re-interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Delaware County, PA in a mass grave. In the 1950's, St. Maria Goretti High School for Girls (now Neumann-Goretti Catholic High School) was built on the site.
Probably on balance as the Civil War lasted 1861-65 the soldiers said to be buried in the "New" St. Marys 1840 - 1880's had their remains removed to the Holy Cross at Yeadon Pa.
NOTE: It is of interest to note that Commodore John Barry a Wexford man credited as being the father of the United States Navy is buried in one of the vaults at Old St Marys as is his wife Sarah who died Nov. 13th 1831 aged 77. He died 13th Sept 1803 aged 59.

Poolesville Methodist Episcopalian Cemetery Poolesville Md.
Probably one of the less known burial sites of soldiers of the 69th. The Poolesville Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1826. A cemetery was established alongside the church in 1837. As Poolesville was close to Camp Observation is would have been a logical place to bury some of the soldiers who died at Camp Observation Md. The names of those listed below are listed on the plaque associated with the small memorial. This was erected in 2002 and contains the remains of what was found of the headstones and graveslabs remaining on the open site. The old wooden church was replaced with the current brick building built in 1868. The congregation left for another area of Poolsville in 1892. Not a lot known of the non 69th Pa soldiers on the plaque but in the case of those listed as belonging to the 69th Pa. recent research has found that amongst those named Higgins, Driscoll, Kearney (Carney), Stokes and also a Pvte Doyle have been found buried in the Old Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia. Also Pvte Stewart McCormick Co. F who died 15th Feb 1862 was later found buried in the now defunct St Marys cemetery in Philadelphia. When this bacame defunct the remains from the cemetery moved to a communal grave at Holy Cross Yeadon Pa. Three others Pvte John Mullen Co. B died 12th Jan 1861, Pvte Thomas McManus Co. D died 21st Feb 1862 and Pvts Frances Finnegan who died 21st Feb 1862 the same day as McManus were not named on plaque nor has any positve proof of where buried has been found. So in all probability they are actually buried here. From the dates it would appear that most died from disease at Camp Observation Md. during the winter encampment of 1861-1862.In a Find a Grave website listing *2017) the following names listed for 69th soldiers.Patrick Higgins died Oct 14th 1861, Patrick Driscoll died Dec 13th 1863, Patrick J Doyle died May 15th 1862,Stewart McCormick died Feb 15th 1862,

George joined the 69th on the Aug.19th 1861 along with his father also a musician. Young George was a versatile musician being able play a variety of instruments including fife and drums. He was appointed to teach the other aspiring musicians in the various companies. Sadly he contracted disease probably typhoid at Camp Observation near Poolsville Md and died there aged just 14 Jan 22nd 1862. He would have a large public funeral in Philadelphia and later be buried in the Hillsdie Cemetery Roslyn Montgomery Co. Pa. His father would survive the war.
